New York— Ex-“Sopranos” star Steve Schirripa, who famously blasted President Barack Obama in May of 2010 for the comments the president made at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner about the reality television series “Jersey Shore,” has agreed to play the role of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for the Romney campaign.

“Back in 2010, Obama got under my skin when I found out he’d been watching ‘Jersey Shore’ instead of, you know, running the (expletive deleted) country,” said Schirripa. “So when the Romney campaign offered me $25 million to pretend I was Chris Christie and campaign for Romney in Ohio, I jumped at the chance.”

Observers have long acknowledged that Schirripa is a dead ringer for the New Jersey governor, the outspoken, self-uncensoring Romney surrogate who gave a rousing Romney-lite keynote address at this year’s Republican Convention in Tampa.

But Romney was apparently “crushed” when Christie not only heaped praise on Obama for his handling of disaster relief after New Jersey was pummeled by hurricane Sandy, but also because Christie scoffed, during a Fox News remote interview, over the possibility of Romney touring his state’s devastation. “I need Romney here like I need a second asshole,” Christie gruffly responded.

“After he heard Governor Christie speak so highly of the president and so dismissively of himself, Governor Romney cried his eyes out for hours,” confessed Romney presidential campaign senior advisor Eric Fehrnstrom. “It was unbearable to see him suffer so. I knew we had to do something big to shake him out of his funk.”

That something big was hiring Schirripa. “I look at the guy and I see Governor Christie,” said a beaming Fehrnstrom. “So I sincerely doubt that any of those 47-percenter bozos in Ohio will be able to tell the difference.”

Schirripa, as Governor Christie, will make campaign stops across Ohio Saturday through Monday. On his last stop in Toledo, he’ll appear with Romney. He is slated to give him Romney big bear hug. An emotional Fehrnstrom said, “I guarantee you it’ll make you want to cry.”
