US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell signals his resolve to make Obama a two-term president.

Washington, DC—Lest you think that the Republican resolve to obstruct the agenda of President Obama has softened since the American people re-elected him to a second term on Tuesday, one need only take note of the intransigent words spoken by US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell this morning on the Capitol steps.

“My number one priority is to ensure Mr. Obama is a two-term president,” he declared. And this time, McConnell added, he has the full weight of the US Constitution behind him since it limits the president to two terms.

Republican Constitutional scholar Christine O’Donnell, who was trounced in the 2010 US Senate race in Delaware against Democrat Chris Coons, and who once famously declared, “I am not a witch,” concurred. “I still haven’t read the entire Constitution yet. It’s kind of longish,” O’Donnell said. “But from what I did read, I’m pretty sure that President Obama can only serve four more years.” In fact, the 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, does limit the presidency to two terms.

Still, this hefty backstop of law hasn’t puffed up McConnell with overconfidence. “I’m not about to take a victory lap at this point,” he said. “I’ve learned the hard way there are no sure things in politics. Heck, even $2.5 billion dollars in campaign spending doesn’t guarantee the presidency or a majority in the Senate.”

However, McConnell said that consistent lying is still a viable path to Republican victory in keeping Obama in check, should all else, including the Constitution, fail to do so. “Look how far blatant mendacity got Romney’s presidential campaign,” he said. “If he had stopped telling the truth altogether way back in April, he could have won and I’d be Senate Majority Leader.”

You know, if it weren’t so much more important to get rid of Citizens United, I’m betting we could get a movement to amend the Constitution to allow 4 or 5 Presidential terms provided the President’s last name ends with “A”.

I like the way your think! First dump Citizens United, then amend the Constitution as you prescribe!
